l'oiseau chante en cage

Peter Keating: "Do you always have to have a purpose? Do you always have to be so damn serious? Can't you ever do things without reason, just like everybody else? You're so serious, so old. Everything's important with you. Everything's great, significant in some way, every minute, even when you keep still. Can't you ever be comfortable--and unimportant?" Howard Roark: "No." -The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. ___________________________

I have the best girlfriend in the world. Case closed. (:

muh baby :)

I’ve only just finished the first book in the controversial series His Dark Materials, a trilogy of fantasy novels written by Phillip Pullman. The first book, originally published as Northern Lights, follows the story of a young girl named Lyra Belacqua and her daemon on their quest to save her friend Roger and her “Uncle” Asriel from the General Oblation Board, or Gobblers. It’s a fantastic tale of independence, growth, self-respect, trust, loss and love. The story is set in a parallel universe, and we first meet Lyra as she traverses her home, Jordan college and the surrounding area. We can all see how mischievous and headstrong she is, full of ideas and pranks. She is the ring-leader of a small child-gang, and the expedition captain as she and Roger explored the undergrounds of Jordan College. Very early in the story we take note of one very essential element, Dust;a strange elementary particle believed by the Magisterium to be related to Original Sin. Children are less affected by dust;  thus the Gobblers, as the general public comes to call the General Oblation Board, begin to kidnap children so that they can perform (or rather test out) egregious operations that will lead to the children being cut off from Dust completely.

Fascinating facts and concepts from The Golden Compass (Northern Lights)

  • The title of the series as a whole, His Dark Materials, came from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, Book 2:

 Into this wilde Abyss,
The Womb of nature and perhaps her Grave,
Of neither Sea, nor Shore, nor Air, nor Fire,
But all these in their pregnant causes mixt
Confus’dly, and which thus must ever fight,
Unless th’ Almighty Maker them ordain
His dark materials to create more Worlds,
Into this wilde Abyss the warie fiend
Stood on the brink of Hell and look’d a while,
Pondering his Voyage; for no narrow frith
He had to cross.— Book 2, lines 910–920

  • The reference to golden compasses can also be found in Paradise Lost.

Then staid the fervid wheels, and in his hand
He took the golden compasses, prepared
In God’s eternal store, to circumscribe
This universe, and all created things:
One foot he centered, and the other turned
Round through the vast profundity obscure

— Book 7, lines 224–229

  • The daemons that accompany the people are essentially their soul, spirit. I love that once their daemons settle they take the shape of whatever animal that has the characteristics reflected in their human counterparts. I wonder what my daemon would be…
  • The word Gobblers was derived from the word Goblin; an Irish sprite that steals the souls of children. I felt that it was clever of him to name them thus since the GOBs were cutting the souls from the children in the book.
  • Some of you may remember all of the controversy surrounding the series, esp when the first book The Golden Compass was made into a film. Many Christians felt that the books were a threat to their religion, and that making a film of these books would increase the publicity and the themes of free thought and elements of atheism will be released within our predominantly Christian society. Read more about this controversy here
  • Pullman wrote the books in response to the infamous Narnia series by C.S.Lewis. A series that perpetuates Christian values and moral pathways. I think that His Dark Materials was a great way to display the power of free thinking. If I were to have a daughter, I’d like her to be a Lyra Silvertongue, that can help herself rather than wait on the big Lion to come and save the day for her. Just saying.
